Abstract: Echo Technical proposes to develop an innovative Miniaturized Impulsive Discharge Acoustic Source (MIDAS) to support the conduct of multi-static Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) missions. The solution proposed is based on a capacitive discharge acoustic source that produces high amplitude impulsive acoustic signals in response to a coded interrogation signal. The MIDAS package incorporates a GPS receiver and low-bandwidth transceiver for transmission of its position and receipt of command signals. Development and demonstration of MIDAS supports the ASW program through: 1. Conceptual development of a high energy density impulsive acoustic source tailored for multi-static sonar in a miniature package size, 2. Significant leverage of a mature commercial technology base, and 3. Application of that technology base to a unique, innovative mission-specific product.
Benefits: This research will provide the US Navy and other DoD components with a disposable impulsive acoustic source for use in littoral ASW. The package proposed is compatible with existing MJU-10 form factor magazines and launchers, and the MIDAS design meets the requirements for the active acoustic source component of a multi-static ASW sonar system. By the end of Phase III, a commercially viable impulsive sound source will be available for detection, sentry, and survey applications.
