Abstract: The objective of this proposal is to validate and assess the application of 3D gaming technology for optimum positioning of sensing and communication platforms in order to enhance C4ISR operations. Commercial gaming technology has matured and evolved to the point that it can potentially provide intuitive and highly cognitive interfaces; and, when coupled with a powerful gaming engine, can model and articulate 3D ISR and communications platform placement, sensor behaviors and accurate algorithm data representation. Because ground, space based and airborne ISR and communication sensors operate in 3 or greater dimensions of space and time, it is essential that ISR planners have a desktop tool application that contextually illustrates RF signal propagation, multi-sensor spatial physics, and the cause and effect of different platform placements. It is our objective to characterize, assess and provide a plan to validate 3D gaming technologies' application to realistically visualize optimum sensor placement, manipulate sensor placement variables, and provide an intuitive, heuristically proven interface that promotes ease and speed of use.
Benefits: Given the opportunity, the end result we intend to achieve (Phase III) is the design and patent of a user interface supported by a uniquely designed engine that allows quick and intuitive access to objects requiring accurate spatial physics. With the dramatic rise in C4ISR sensors and networks, there is widespread need for such an interface and 3D modeling capability that will more effectively represent information or intelligence assets. Beyond C4ISR optimization, the commercial and defense applications generated by N06-097 can benefit nearly any market sector. Three dimensional, multi-sensorial, cognitive human interfaces taking advantage of data algorithms are at the cutting edge of the commercial and defense needs and uses.
