Abstract: The Phase I SBIR effort will focus on identifying and implementing the optimal approach to a retrofit of the AN/SPN-41 aircraft landing aid transmitter with a modern, solid-state modulator . The purpose of the retrofit is to increase the reliability, maintainability, and supportability of the transmitting set, which assists pilots in their final approach to a carrier landing. In parallel, DTI will work with the radar tube's manufacturer to investigate and define the modifications required to achieve increased bandwidth and RF power control. In Phase II, DTI will develop a qualified First Article of the retrofit, and work with CPI to implement the magnetron changes required.
Benefits: The retrofit will extend the service life of the AN/SPN-41, and reduce its operational costs. Additionally, performance and capability enhancements in the form of expanded tunable bandwidth, and remotely controlled RF power programming, will increase the capability and operational flexibility of this critical system landing system. At the completion of Phase II, DTI and CPI will have a fully tested retrofit kit available for production and fleet installation.
