| Abstract: |
The use of a multi-functional composite material will alleviate the requirements for expensive maintenance or replacement of satellite hazardous material storage lockers on Navy ships without sacrificing excellent fire protection. The composite material storage locker, consisting of a structural material and one or more conditioning materials, will be demonstrated to meet all of the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association Code 30 and MIL-S-901, Grade B. The composite material structural material has been certified for use within the pressure hull of USN submarines. In full production, the composite material storage lockers will be relatively inexpensive because the both the constituent materials and the material consolidation process are inexpensive. The conditioning materials used in the fabrication of the storage locker will be specific to the materials that are to be stored in the lockers. These materials will be demonstrated during the performance of the Phase I Base effort. A prototype composite material satellite hazardous material storage locker will be fabricated as part of the Phase I Base effort and tested as part of the Option effort. The testing will consist of a shock table test and a fire test. |

The use of a fire resistant, corrosion resistant satellite hazardous material storage locker will save the Navy money through reduced maintenance time and longer life cycles. The lockers will not denigrate any fire protection for the increase in life cycle. The technology developed for these satellite hazardous material storage lockers is applicable to offshore mineral exploration and recovery, as well as on commercial shipping. Any where that fire is a critical issue will find benefit in the technology being developed and exploited in the proposed effort. |
