Abstract: Utilizing directed energy weapons effectively in an offensive situation or determining the level of protection needed for defense requires the ability to select the proper DEW source characteristics and method of delivery based on the target, any shielding and the desired effect. This is an incredibly difficult problem to resolve due to the large number of variables to contend with. Accurate Automation Corporation (AAC) will employ its experience in the generation of electromagnetic pulses as well as designing HPM protection devices coupled with our work in modeling and simulation to develop a tool that models electromagnetic pulse (EMP) sources, potential targets (systems, sub-systems and components), attack scenarios (direct air propagation, power and data line transmission), and shielding methods (structures, metal enclosures, etc.) in order to assess the susceptibility of electronics and vulnerability of systems.
Benefits: Work completed under this Phase I contract will advance the state of the art in EMP modeling and simulation providing breakthrough capability for use in developing the next generation of EMP weapon systems or in developing counter measures to the evolving DEW threat. At the conclusion of Phase II, Accurate Automation Corporation will have demonstrated the feasibility of using modeling and simulation to predict the vulnerability of electronic equipment in an operational environment and will deliver a beta release software program suitable for field testing by knowledgeable users. During the Phase II effort, Phase III support will be sought from some combination of industrial partner, prime contractor, or government sources. AAC has demonstrated a successful record of accomplishment in converting concepts into fielded products. AAC has 28 Phase III contracts with numerous prime defense contractors.
