Abstract: To address the Navy need for network communications between a submarine and a very small UAV, Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposes to develop a new Submarine-to-UAV Network Communication System (SUNET). This system combines a mobile ad hoc network architecture with our in-house secure chaotic communication methods to offer a high data rate digital radio communication (transmission of video and data) between a submarine and the UAVs located over the horizon (OTH). The result is a 50-200 MBps, low-probability-of-intercept communication in an ad hoc network of multiple UAVs using existing submarine and UAV antennas. The low size, weight, and power (SWaP: <2 in x 2 in x 0.5 in, <0.22 lb, ~5 W) of the SUNET communication modules allows integrating the SUNET on very small UAVs (e.g., Switchblade) to support high data rate video and data transmission OTH using UAV network. In Phase I, POC will develop the system architecture and design, analyze the system design to confirm its SWaP for use on very small UAVs, and demonstrate a feasibility prototype. In Phase II, an advanced SUNET prototype will be assembled and demonstrated in a laboratory setting and will be ready for initial field testing in a small UAV network.
Benefits: Military applications of the SUNET will include LPI/LPD software radios, satellite communications, and specialized communications (including troops and distributed sensor networks) in noisy environments, such as combat zones, where electro-magnetic (EM) interference is one of the major limiting factors for communication. The SUNET can be incorporated by law enforcement agencies and border security to improve communication equipment. Commercial applications of SUNET include forest fire detection systems, first responder communication equipment, which will enable communication in environments with EM interference.
