Abstract: The objective os this work is to utilize acoustic emission for early detection of cracks in helicopter gearboxes. Cracks will be identified including their location and extent, the system is envisioned to communicate this information as well as the remaining life of the part. Statistical signal processing and conditioning will be a vital part of the work. AbM Engineering, LLC is partnering with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to accomplish this mission.
Benefits: A comprehensive system that detects early crack initiation, alerts the operator as well as the ground/carrier engineers and crew for proper maintenance and/or repairs. The benefit is an active and dynamic health management system for parts longevity and, most importantly, enhanced safety measures.
