Abstract: A rugged design of high power, high gain, low-loss transmitter with low profile is proposed to develop and test in Phase I. The design is based on self-focusing effect of surface waves leaking from a tapered, multi-wavelength-long, slow-wave structure. High directivity of the antenna is provided by coherent spatial interference of these waves enhanced by a horn, bandgap segmentation of the structure, and stacking of the structures into an array. The design is capable to handle very high power and deliver circular polarization. It is integrated with window and electromagnetically-tunable materials for steering with quadrupole static fields superimposed externally.
Benefits: The antenna to be developed in this project can be applied for direct energy applications not limited by weapons aimed to destroy enemy's electronics. Direct energy is applied in geology and construction industry for defrosting soils, in mining for pre-processing, e.g., copper ores, and to destroy old concrete constructions for precise demolition. Besides the high gain antenna can be applied (with scaling) for SATCOM and inter-satellite communications. And finally the antenna can be applied for power beaming both on-ground and in space (to deliver solar energy converted into microwaves). The space communication and defense sectors applications requre different approach, as it is more supportive of semi-custom, higher added-value innovative products, which RadiaBeam Technologies can efficiently design and manufacture. Specifically relevant to this project, RadiaBeam has in-house RF manufacturing and testing capabilities. In fact, during the last year, we booked over $1 million in sales of custom RF structures. We expect direct sales revenues from the defense sector to grow steadily to about $10 million in the 5 year time frame.
