Abstract: Through the proposed NAVY SBIR program, NanoSonic will create and qualify a low-cost, easily applied VOC-free HybridSilr CRES pipe leak repairing resin that will readily seal pressurized leaking pipes and prevent crevice corrosion on in-service Aircraft carriers while underway. NanoSonic's HybridSilr CRES leak repairing material will build from NanoSonic's anticorrosion coating technology which has undergone extensive corrosion qualification, demonstrated exceptional solvent resistance to JP-5 fuel, has self-cleaning characteristics within actual marine environments, strong adhesion to metallic substrates without the need for extensive surface preparation or primers and is currently undergoing sea trials on a U.S. Navy vessel. Of particular importance for interior integration, HybridSilr has exceptional fire resistance and is certified as a "fire restrictive material" per the IMO. Building from this technical foundation, NanoSonic will adapt its HybridSilr Anticorrosion coating technology to serve as a VOC-free, welded joint leak sealant that will cure within seconds of deposition to stop existing leaks while also affording the environmental durability necessary to last as long as the base piping installation. A rigorous statistical design of experiments will be employed to down-select Phase I nanocomposites. Transition success is ensured through multiple Phase III transition partners and an established pilot scale HybridSilr manufacturing infrastructure.
Benefits: NanoSonic's VOC-free HybridSilr CRES pipe leak repairing resin will be an extension of its base HybridSilr material technology, which has drawn significant interest from the DoD due to its unique ability to rapidly transition to environmentally robust ceramic nanocomposites with innovative combinations of otherwise mutually exclusive material properties. HybridSil has received an R&D 100 award for its innovative combination of high temperature durability and high velocity, ballistic resistant mechanical properties. Unlike competing epoxy technologies that employ rigid, flammable copolymers combined with chemically dissimilar fillers, NanoSonic's HybridSil CRES pipe leak repair resins will be self-priming and not require extensive surface preparation, rapidly cure within seconds of deposition, readily stop existing leaks while withstanding 190 psi, and have complete chemical resistance to JP-5 fuel. By providing a low-cost, easily depositable pipe leak repairing resins that is VOC-free, non-toxic, and extremely solvent resistant, NanoSonic's envisions considerable military and civilian market interest during Phase II and III efforts.
