Abstract: Freedom Photonics, a leader in photonic components and subsystems will explore the new approaches to the balanced photodiode implementation, to obtain and verify a design that meets the Navy's requirements, and to leverage our expertise in photonic components and packaging to produce a rugged final prototype, suitable for production. This work will leverage many of our Government and commercial programs and technologies.
Benefits: High speed, high power capacity balanced photodiodes are useful for a number of analog RF applications such as Fiber Optic Antenna Link (FOAL) Systems with antenna Remoting, RF over fiber systems, instrumentation, generation of low phase noise microwave waveforms, and radar. There is a market need for photodiodes that are simultaneously high speed (40 GHz) and can handle high photocurrent levels in the 100s of mA. Additionally, these applications include next generation satellite communications, airplane avionic systems, Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) and other robotic platforms, missile internal communications and shipboard communications. In all of these cases, future systems will generate or require such high data rates that the utilization of high capacity fiber-optic systems becomes imperative. Additionally, large volume markets, such as datacom and data center, will be evaluated and pursued.
