Abstract: |
Raman spectroscopy is a non-destructive optical technique for detecting molecules on a sample surface, and it is well-suited for the quantification of organic molecules within a mixture. Convenient hand-held Raman spectroscopes are currently manufactured by Ocean Optics, a recognized world leader in the manufacture of miniaturized spectrometers, and we propose to customize one for specific use by military personnel. Our team combines expertise in enhanced Raman (including surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, SERS) and textiles with device manufacturing capability resulting in a reliable route to an effective in-situ permethrin detector. |
Benefits: |
In addition to military fabrics (primarily the US branches of service and US allies), permethrin is used commercially to protect livestock and outdoor living space. Improper exposure to permethrin may pose a cancer risk, and permethrin runoff is known to be detrimental to aquatic life. Therefore non-military markets include groups with a tie to commercial use including worker safety and environmental protection. Our detector will benefit certain industrial farming communities where concentrated permethrin products are handled regularly, either as safety checks or environmental checks. |
