Abstract: A new generation of atomic magnetometers are now becoming available that feature high performance in a package more than an order of magnitude smaller than the systems they replace. The development effort for such small, low-cost sensors has been focused on their implementation on small, disposable UAV platforms that are purpose built for magnetic sensing. The proposed project is designed to bring this sensor technology to existing, larger fixed and rotary wing aircraft. By towing the sensor it is possible to minimize the influence of platform magnetic noise.
Benefits: A compact towed magnetometer system on a medium sized UAV or other platform may be used for high performance, autonomous magnetic survey. Previously, only full-sized helicopters or airplanes could handle the size and weight of atomic magnetometers.
