Abstract: Technology Assessment & Transfer, Inc. and subcontractors propose novel, high performance additive manufactured (AM) heat exchangers for military systems. The AM process will allow for conformal, lightweight designs that optimize use of available space. Design and modeling efforts in Phase I will identify enhanced heat transfer surfaces compatible with, and made possible by, an AM fabrication approach. A materials trade-off assessment will also be conducted to downselect a preferred material for further Phase I Option Period and Phase II development. A subscale heat exchanger test part will be fabricated in Phase I to prove feasibility of the proposed approach.
Benefits: The conformal, AM heat exchanger fabrication technology developed during this program will enable enhanced thermal surface designs to be realized and enable efficient use of available space in military thermal management systems. Other commercial industries including aerospace, power generation, automobiles, high end computing, personal electronics, appliances, and manufacturing have similar and overlapping heat dissipation requirements and will benefit from the development of this technology.
