Abstract: True anytime/anywhere access to video streams on board a ship is best achieved via a wireless solution. However, in the past many wireless solutions proposed for ship board communication have failed to deliver any significant throughput due to the harsh multipath and interference conditions present onboard vessels. Recent research and field trials using breakthrough multi-antenna MIMO technology has demonstrated high throughput (as much as 40 Mbps) connectivity on board ships and through closed bulkheads. In this effort we look to develop a tailor made MIMO solution specifically designed to meet the needs of video distribution onboard a vessel. This will be achieved by investigating larger MIMO systems, going towards more advanced MIMO decoding techniques, and a MIMO centric multi-cast protocol. Our proposed solution will be centered around low cost COTS solution and will be small, light weight and easy to deploy.
Benefits: Once high throughput (25 Mbps - 30 Mbps) wireless connectivity is available throughout the ship, then commanders and other personnel can access any number of video streams on a portable tablet at all locations within the ship. They can access the information they need where they need it as opposed to having to go back and forth between a wall mount display to access the needed video and/or information.
