Abstract: LightCables is a modular system designed for naval as well as many other applications. LightCables multiplexes a variety of tactical signals on board a warship, e.g. USS Lake Champlain equipped with Aegis combat system, onto an optical cable using ruggedized wavelength division multiplexing. The system is capable of handling low and high speed serial data links, digital video links, networking as well as RF/microwave links.
Benefits: By employing RWDM scheme, the LightCables system consolidates a large number of electrical signals into a single strain of fiber optic. The lighter and lower cost ruggedized fiber optical cable replaces the bulky, heavy and expensive copper cable onboard. The modular design system increases cable reliability, reduces operating cost and scales easily with future capability growth. In addition to warships, the technology is also applicable to other platforms such as an aircraft. In addition to military use, the technologies and products developed in this program have commercial potential in mobile communication towers, and cable TV and internet distribution networks, etc. The system helps operators to reduce cost of cabling, equipment and maintenance.
