Abstract: SA Photonics Neptune-HDR system provides high data rate underwater optical communications with data rates greater than 1 Gbps at link distances up to 100m in clean ocean conditions. The Neptune-HDR system combines techniques from our field proved terrestrial Free-Space Optical (FSO) communication systems and our earlier generation Neptune UW FSO system, with advanced lasers and detectors to develop a state-of-the-art underwater communication system. Neptune-HDR provides full duplex-communication and has built in beam steering and beam-tracking capability, resulting in a fully integrated, compact and low-SWaP communication terminal. Rapid link acquisition is insured using a dedicated acquisition sensor allowing acquisition without the use of auxiliary acoustic links.
Benefits: SA Photonics Neptune-HDR system promises to deliver high data rate underwater communications that is both LPI and LPD. By relying solely on non-acoustic optical means, no acoustic signatures are transmitted. Neptune-HDR's compact size and low power consumption will enable use on small UUV/AUVs and enable rapid transfer of data between underwater objects.
