Abstract: Current US Navy submarine periscope designs incorporate a direct-detection laser rangefinder (LRF) for ranging to both open water and shore targets. The US Navy has expressed the desire to develop a fiber-coupled device to allow the LRF transceiver to be located below the waterline. This will free up space within the periscope in addition to reducing the heat signature above the waterline. The Navy has also expressed a desire to reduce the probability of detection of the LRF by a threat sensor. Fibertek, Inc. proposes an innovative solution which addresses both of the Navy's desires.
Benefits: Commercialization of a fiber-coupled LRF with the performance specifications expected would open up a large range of applications within the DoD community. Besides periscopes, there are multiple applications where remotely locating the transceiver (and the associated size and weight) presents new possibilities for LRF applications.
