Abstract: GLSV Inc. will develop an innovative, modular, adjustable system to launch and recover UUVs from the Freedom and Independence-class LCS ships, using the LCS stern overhead cranes. One common platform will be adjustable to be used on both ships, and will provide fast tempo launch and recovery during Sea State 3 conditions. The L&R platform will be adjustable and adaptable to accommodate a wide variety of UUVs of different sizes and characteristics. GLSV will develop innovative strategies for actuation and control, and will conduct multi-physics dynamic simulation modeling to establish feasibility of the design performance.
Benefits: GLSV?Ts innovative, modular launch and recovery system will provide a common platform that can be used on a ship with a low deck, such as the LCS Freedom class, and also on a ship with a deck that is at least 15 feet above the waterline, such as the LCS Independence class. The system will be adjustable to be reconfigured for a wide variety of different UUVs. Fast tempo launch and recovery will be conducted at higher ship speeds. The system will offer improved reliability to conduct L&R during Sea State 3 conditions. The system will be a compact, modular design that is readily stowed, and easily deployed. Commercial applications include offshore oil and gas exploration, environmental assessment, geophysical surveys, pipeline surveys, environmental monitoring, and pre- and post dredging surveys.
