| Abstract: |
An innovative integrated motor/propulsor (IMP) system is proposed that will improve the power density, efficiency and reduce acoustic signatures over existing designs. Gains in power density will be achieved by reducing the required motor torque in combination with motor structures that improve power density while working within the physical limits of the windings and magnetic materials. |
| Benefits: |
With the performance improvements that are anticipated by our IMP concept, we intend to seize the opportunity associated with advancing electric propulsion technology. Military electric ship propulsion for submersible and surface craft would enable increased war-fighting effectiveness through increased stealth, range, economy, survivability, reduced electromagnetic and acoustic signatures, and high power availability for advanced sensors, weapons and armor. Many of these attributes are important in commercial applications as well. Additional commercial applications can be found in the distributed generation industry.
