Abstract: Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are susceptible to damage under service conditions due to environmental contaminants such as calcium-magnesium-aluminum-silicon-oxide systems (CMAS). UES Inc proposes to design and fabricate composite TBC coatings to provide enhanced protection against CMAS attack. The composite TBCs will be evaluated to demonstrate their protective characteristics and hence durability against CMAS. Highly ranked composite coatings will be selected for further development in Phase II. UES has teamed up with Penn State University to perform on this project.
Benefits: Successful completion of the proposed technology will provide composite TBC coatings that will have enhanced durability in the presence of CMAS compared to the current TBC coatings. This will enable the application of composite TBC on the hot section of turbine engines. Both commercial and military turbine engines that employ TBC will benefit from this technology.
