Abstract: Aircraft without modern cargo handling systems, such as the V-22 tiltrotor, must rely on a large number of chains and straps to adequately restrain internal cargo loads. Loading and unloading such aircraft is a complex and time-consuming task. Creare proposes a lightweight, compact, high-strength, and adaptable restraint system, capable of securing a large number of loads of varying sizes and shapes. Our innovative concept provides central tensioning, load limiting, and load distribution capabilities through a flexible set of modular components. With this system, cargo may be rapidly secured while still meeting the multi-axis load retention criteria. In Phase I, we will prove the feasibility of our restraint concept by: (1) determining the primary requirements for the system; (2) refining our design concept to address these requirements using analysis and modeling to support our design assumptions; (3) developing a proof-of-concept demonstration of the design; and (4) conducting a number of tests to demonstrate the feasibility of the concept and to provide data on the performance of the individual system components. In Phase II, we will complete a number of design, build, and test cycles to improve on the Phase I prototype before testing the system in the field.
Benefits: The primary benefit of our restraint concept is the speed and ease with which internal cargo can be secured to standard tie-down fittings. This will enable rapid turnarounds, minimizing aircraft and crew exposure in hot zones, and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of aircraft such as the V-22, H-53, and others. Furthermore, the load distribution and load-limiting capabilities of the system enable loads to be safely carried within the restraint limits of these aircraft. The concept is flexible and may be adapted to many cargo types and aircraft configurations. It is lightweight and can be rapidly disassembled for very compact storage.
