Abstract: Design and develop an alternative concept to replace the Electronic Function Selector (EFS) used in sonobuoys. Currently setting buoy operating parameters is a time consuming manual process and misprogramming requires the crewman to restart the program process from the beginning. The new handheld device is the primary interface for programming sonobuoys when the aircraft is on the ground. The handheld EFS programming terminal will use wireless link to interface with buoys; when buoys are checked-in/out of inventory "the buoy locker", and immediately prior to loading into the stores of the MMA aircraft rotary launcher. The scope of this effort may include additional sonobuoy stores inventory and management features including inventory control and mission planning
Benefits: The fleet will derive benefit by using a handheld controller that automatically programs the EFS functions. Automation is expected to provide faster time to setup, reduced paperwork, and accurate accounting of sonobuoys in the aircraft and on the ground.
