Abstract: The team of RWL Inc., Mountain Research LLC, and AccuWeather proposes to develop and demonstrate a system that will; detect various contaminants in storm water flows; process the data into useful information; transmit the information wirelessly; provide alerts, storage and trending; be capable of initiating actions such as gate-closings and treatment initiation; and collect weather information that will support proactive responses. The heart of the system will be RLW Inc.'s S2NAPr which was developed in earlier SBIR projects for machinery health monitoring. Mountain Research brings environmental monitoring and treatment expertise to the team; AccuWeather is known internationally.
Benefits: The system proposed will substantially reduce both the risk of environmental violations in shipyards and the cost of monitoring for potential violations. The system will share wireless communication resources at the shipyards that are installing wireless systems for other applications. The work will benefit both Navy shipyards and private yards, and has excellent potential for use in various industrial sites that have potential for storm water contamination, and related violations. The system will be proactive, using weather forecasts to anticipate high-risk conditions.
