Abstract: This proposal will develop new forward osmosis processes for desalination of seawater to freshwater, using unique solvents and solutes, to reduce the energy requirements of desalination, in comparison to conventional thermal or reverse osmosis routes for seawater desalination. The process to be developed will be capable of being easily scaled up and modularized per LCS and ICD rrequirements, as well as ISO standards, to enable easy containerization and interfacing with onboard ship systems.
Benefits: An inexpensive and energy-efficient seawater desalination process has enormous applications for marine uses, as well as for creating new freshwater resources for use by water-deficient coastal areas in the world.
