Abstract: Acoustic systems for detecting and identifying possible threats offer great potenital for increasing situational awareness and protecting both personnel and fixed assets. It is proposed that a biomimetic approach to processing sound can greatly increase machine based performance for locating and identifying threats sounds such as small arms fire, mortar and RPG launches, as well as potential threats such as the chambering of rounds, approach of light vehicles, destruction or climbing of fencing etc.
Benefits: The proposed technology has applications not only for military applications to protect soldiers and emplaced assets, but also for Homeland security and civilian security purposes, as well as for environmental monitoring, pipeline protection, and tracking/study of endangered species.
