Abstract: To address the Navy need for highly integrated, ultraminiature, nonintrusive, wireless, weapon diagnostics systems, Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposes to develop a new Wireless Ultraminiature Smart Sensor (WUMSS). This proposed device is based on an ultra low-power RF transceiver that integrates an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a multipoint control unit (MCU) on board for a very small (~0.8 cm diameter x 0.5 cm form factor), low cost (<$2) sensor system with power harvesting using POC's proprietary technology. The innovation of an integrated MCU/RF/ADC will allow a small sensor size due to a reduction in the number of discrete components, and an operational lifetime in excess of 10 years due to its energy-efficient design and the integration of POCs power harvesting technology. WUMSS occupies the smallest possible form factor in order to minimize visible changes to the weapon systems. In Phase I POC will demonstrate the feasibility of WUMSS by creating a prototype sensor node. In Phase II POC plans to further develop the WUMSS sensor into a Phase II prototype that can be field-deployable for testing on real weapon systems.
Benefits: Successful WUMSS technology can be ported to utilities, manufacturing, unmanned power substations, and so on, for better evaluation of electrical system performance; in this role it can in order to save time and money by providing better troubleshooting capability by monitoring systems before that currently have to be done monitored by hand. This can saving millions of dollars per year, as well as reducing the complexity of sensor systems due to the lack by eliminating the need for of wired connectivity.
