Abstract: This proposal will investigate state-of-the-art acoustic sensor and power amplifier technology and develop innovative design concepts compatible with the need to define and document an EWARS acoustic sensor system for Navy development. The research will explore active acoustic sensor and related electronic component technology which is compatible with the severe packaging and cost constraints of airborne ASW expendable sensors.
Benefits: The development of a wide band acoustic source / receiver sonobuoy will provide the airborne ASW Navy with a unique and cost effective tool to measure acoustic environmental parameters of critical value to the Navy in carrying out its ASW missions. Such a sonobuoy sensor system can also be used in ASW intelligence gathering exercises at significant cost savings to the USN. Its use in hostile areas of strong ASW interest takes full advantage of the airborne Navy's quick reaction capability when targets of opportunity arise. The environmental data collection capability of the EWARS system will permit the Navy to continually update performance prediction algorithms in the dynamic littoral world of ASW operations.
