Abstract: TIAX will develop a flexible and comprehensive open architecture energy storage management platform that is broadly applicable to battery and capacitor-based energy storage systems up to at least 1000V, while simultaneously addressing serious safety concerns that have impeded fielding of lithium-ion in Navy applications. The novel system will employ novel technology for detection of internal short circuits, and novel algorithms for diagnostic and prognostic function that is superior to that delivered by current energy storage management systems.
Benefits: Improved energy storage management will enable the Navy to implement large scale electrochemical energy storage systems (batteries and capacitors) for radically new platforms and greatly extended mission capabilities. The TIAX energy storage management system will also facilitate deployment of large, high energy batteries and electrochemical capacitors in important emerging applications such as vehicular power and stationary electrical energy storage. The flexibility of the TIAX system will make it adaptable to the diverse variety of electrochemical energy storage chemistry and types being considered for these emerging applications. Enhanced safety features of the TIAX technology will lower a critical barrier for market penetration of large scale, high energy storage technologies. The TIAX technology will also be attractive to the established portable power market, where the enhanced battery safety and reliability that it offers will be highly valued in notebook computer batteries.
