Abstract: Design and analyze a new approach for a compact integrated laser/modulator suitable for high performance Military RF/photonic links. Novel design and packaging techniques including hybrid integration of narrow-linewidth, low-RIN high-power laser and a wideband LiNbO3 modulator to form a compact analog optical transmitter capable of high performance, operational over a wide temperature range.
Benefits: A compact integrated Laser/Modulator analog transmitter is a key enabling technology for high performance analog RF fiber optic links. RF fiber optic links have the potential for significant SWaP reduction and higher frequency operation as compared to conventional coaxial cable links. If the advantages of reduced SWaP can be paired with a high RF performance level (high RF link Gain, low Noise Figure and high Spur-Free Dynamic Range) this integrated analog transmitter could help replace coaxial cable over a wide range of military and commercial platforms, including SWaP constrained airborne platforms. Implementing this integrated module using low-loss, high-power-handling LiNbO3 modulator technology with proven performance and reliability for linear analog fiber-optic link applications with a compact packaging concept should meet the required RF performance leading to the earliest system insertion.
