Abstract: QorTek plans to utilize commercial RF communication chipsets paired with state of the art GaN-based RF amplifiers as to deliver a novel solution that is form fact compatible with legacy equipment yet will allow the Navy to realize target >225MBPS data transmission rates without any need to replace existing towed sonar cabling. The solution has distinct advantages of having a well-supported supply chain and furnishing the Navy with a direct drop-in replacement for existing older designed data transmission equipment.
Benefits: The overall sonar system market size is currently around $3.5B but that encompasses both Commercial and Military sonar with multiple industries benefitting from the proposed technology. The first and most likely non-military transition path would be Towed Arrays for oil and gas exploration. QorTek is already transitioning power amplifiers into the Oil and Gas Exploration market for down hole well imaging. We have been fabricating and delivering a number of arrays worth of power amplifiers to our partner for downhole well imaging. Our partner is currently utilizing fiber to communicate from the surface to the downhole well and would directly benefit from a lower cost/higher performance analog modem solution. Towed arrays are very similar technology to downhole well imaging and QorTek plans to leverage existing contacts to branch further out into these and other technology sectors.
