Abstract: Advances in sensor technology and new capabilities within towed arrays are demanding high bandwidth communications links between the towed array and the host vessel. While fiber optic tow cables exist, retrofitting the fleet of submarines to accommodate the new cables is cost prohibitive. To address this issue, NuWaves Engineering proposes the Innovative Towed Array Cable Modem (INTERCOM). INTERCOM leverages advanced 5G enabling technology and adapts it to the special requirements for operating deep under water and within the limitations posed by the coaxial tow cable. Due to highly integrated components, INTERCOM will be able to meet the Navy?Ts requirement of 225 Mbps throughput within the 0.75?? diameter by 5.25?? cylinder.
Benefits: The INTERCOM will greatly enhance the ability of towed arrays by increasing the available bandwidth for transferring sensor information by more than 4-times. The extremely compact size should accommodate integration into all existing towed array configurations. In addition to US Navy sales, the INTERCOM has potential for sales to coalition partners and underseas oil and gas exploration.
