Abstract: Invocon?Ts Wireless Intra-vehicle Sensor Package for Enhanced Reliability (WISPER) will decrease the cost and increase the reliability of instrumenting launch vehicles. WISPER will accomplish these goals in two ways: (1) Minimize vehicle weight - this increases the useful payload or decreases the propulsion requirements. (2) Minimize physical interconnects - this simplifies integration, testing, and launch control and eliminates failure points. WISPER operates in a stand-alone mode or to augment existing data acquisition systems. WISPER follows a rich heritage of instrumentation developed specifically for missiles and other space vehicles. Many of these systems provide wireless connectivity to improve Size, Weight, Power, and Cost (SWaP-C) constraints.
Benefits: WISPER will benefit the Navy and other DoD organizations by simplifying the cost of instrumenting missiles and other flight vehicles for testing. Both ground and flight tests will benefit from WISPER due to the increased efficiency and reliability that it provides. Sounding rockets are excellent candidates for proving and using WISPER due to their small size research orientation. Government prime contractors and other launch vehicle providers will benefit from this capability for the same reason as the DoD. Small launch providers that are entering the market for CubeSats can also leverage these capabilities. The CubeSat market will, in turn, benefit from WISPER due to the reduced launch backlog that it will help to enable.
